A concerning TikTok trend is circulating among students at Dalhart ISD, encouraging them to insert pencil lead, foil, or other conductive materials into their school-issued Chromebook USB ports to make the device smoke or spark. While some users see it as a prank or viral challenge, this is both dangerous and illegal.
Tampering with electronic devices in this way poses serious fire and electrical hazards. It can cause permanent damage to the Chromebook, lead to potential injury, and may include school disciplinary action or even criminal charges for property destruction. The lithium ion batteries, when short-circuited, can overheat, swell, catch fire, or even explode, posing a serious threat to the student and others nearby
Educators and parents are urged to talk with students about the consequences of participating in such trends. School issued technology is not only a valuable learning tool but also school property therefore, intentionally damaging or destroying it is not a joke, it's destruction of school property.
