A concerning TikTok trend is circulating among students at Dalhart ISD, encouraging them to insert pencil lead, foil, or other conductive materials into their school-issued Chromebook USB ports to make the device smoke or spark. While some users see it as a prank or viral challenge, this is both dangerous and illegal. Tampering with electronic devices in this way poses serious fire and electrical hazards. It can cause permanent damage to the Chromebook, lead to potential injury, and may include school disciplinary action or even criminal charges for property destruction. The lithium ion batteries, when short-circuited, can overheat, swell, catch fire, or even explode, posing a serious threat to the student and others nearby Educators and parents are urged to talk with students about the consequences of participating in such trends. School issued technology is not only a valuable learning tool but also school property therefore, intentionally damaging or destroying it is not a joke, it's destruction of school property.

Dalhart ISD Update: I apologize for the late post but we had a board meeting this evening and wanted to meet as administrators and check in with law enforcement before posting. Here is what I can share with you in regard to today’s events. Law enforcement was made aware of a threat at DHS. They notified the district and students were placed in holding. After making sure there was no Imminent danger students were released to lunch on the high school campus. The DISD administration and law enforcement followed every lead and still have not found a creditable threat. DISD wants to thank the Dalhart PD, both the Hartley & Dallam County Sheriff Offices, as well as the fire departments and Emergency Management Coordinators for their swift response and making sure we were safe. Law enforcement was present on all 4 campuses. I was very proud of our administration, our faculty, and our students. Everyone responded appropriately and made sure our students were taken care of. I understand parent concerns and the desire for more communication. But there are three very big important factors that determine what and when we can share information. #1 Our first priority is student & staff safety and making sure we are not in imminent danger. We can not waste valuable time communicating when the facility has not been secure. #2 We do not want to impede an investigation and must have law enforcement approval before releasing information. #3 Every bit of information we share with parents and community members on social media, the bad guys could have access to as well. If you are upset with anyone of the timing of the communication be upset with me. We will take every threat serious, we cannot assume anything is not serious, but never doubt your child’s safety is our number one responsibility. Understand that most administrators have children that attend DISD, & some of us have spouses that are employed here as well. As far as allowing your child to attend school tomorrow. No one knows your child better than you do. If your child is concerned or you have concerns regarding them attending school tomorrow, keep them home with you. They will be marked with an excused absence. Both today and tomorrow’s excused absence will not count against your child for attendance purposes or in regards to semester exams. Safety will always outweigh academics in regard to DISD decisions. The high school and junior high campuses were in the middle of six weeks exams. We WILL NOT HAVE SIX WEEKS EXAMS, for the first six weeks. We understand students will not be in the right state of mind to take tests this week. We will have assessments next week to see where we are at academically. We will have a heavy presence of law enforcement on each campus this week and as long as it takes. If I have not addressed your concerns please do not hesitate to reach me by my cell or office phone or by email. Sincerely, Jeff Byrd Superintendent of Schools Dalhart ISD
